The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power provided the data here in response to a public records act request from the Los Angeles Times. It shows the amount paid to each of the department’s roughly 10,000 employees in each calendar year from 2008 to 2012.
The average total pay of DWP employees in 2012, $101,237, is more than 50% higher than the average total pay of all other city employees, The Times found. It's also about 25% higher than employees at comparable public and private utilities, according to a report commissioned by the City Council last year.
Each record shows the employee’s base pay, overtime, lump sum payments — typically for unused vacation days when the person leaves the department — and “other” compensation, which can cover any of a wide range of payments such as vehicle allowances, disability payments, payments for unused sick time and bonuses for being bilingual. Job title classifications appear here exactly as they were provided by the department.
